Synod 2021-2023

Pope Francis has called for a Synod of the world-wide Catholic Church to commence in October 2021 and culminating with a General Assembly of all the Bishops in October 2023.

What is a Synod?

Synod means gathering, assembling for debate. In the Catholic Church it has traditionally involved the Bishops of the Church. This time the Pope wants to focus on the ancient Greek meaning of the word which is “walking together”. He wants the entire Church to participate with everyone having the right to discern, to listen to the Holy Spirit and to respond. He particularly wants to listen to the laity, especially young people and women. He also wants to listen to the voice of minorities, the discarded and the excluded.

Why now?

The Pope believes that we are witnessing defining changes in society and have arrived at a crucial transition in the life of the Church. The global tragedy of the Covid-19 Pandemic has revived the sense that we are a global community where one person’s problems are the problems of all. The pandemic has made the already existing inequalities and inequities explode. The tragic condition faced by migrants in all regions of the world shows how high and strong the barriers dividing the single human family still are.

Purpose

The purpose of the Synod is not to produce more documents. Rather it is intended to inspire people to dream about the Church we are called to be, to make hopes flourish, to stimulate trust, to bind up wounds, to weave new and deeper relationships, to learn from one another, to build bridges, to enlighten minds, warm hearts and restore strength to our hands for our common mission. Fundamental Question The Pope wants us to reflect on one fundamental question: As a Church walking together, proclaiming the Gospel, what steps does the Holy Spirit invite us to take in order to grow in this journey together?
